Examining Codes of Ethics
A.Code of Ethics of the Division for Early Childhood(DEC) of the Council for Exceptional Children
- We shall use individually appropriate assessment strategies including multiple sources of information such as observations, interviews with significant caregivers, formal and informal assessments to determine children's learning styles, strengths, and challenges. I chose this ethic because as a professional it gives me clear instruction on how to correctly assess my student. It is not just based on a written test. A professional is to recognize that there are numerous factors that contributes to an exceptional child's success or failure.
- We shall support professionals new to the field by mentoring them in the practice of evidence and ethically based services. This is extremely important to me as a professional. I remember the first time I had to refer a child to resources to be considered for a learning disability. I felt totally alone, as a first year teacher I had no mentor to walk me through the proper steps of how to insure that this student receives the educational support that was needed. My student did not receive the services needed because I was unfamiliar with the process. Professionals new to the field must be mentored so that the child can received the services they need.
- We shall empower families with information and resources so that they are informed consumers of services for their children. This is important to me as a professional because my job is to offer children or students the best education or care available. In order for me to insure this happens I must include the family. The family is a vital component of seeing that my goal as an educator is fulfilled. If the family is aware of resources that will help them care for the exceptional child, whether it be financially, emotionally or educationally. The child will produce positive results do to a supportive family.
- To base program practices upon current knowledge and research in the field of early childhood education, child development, and related disciplines, as well as on particular knowledge of each child. This is important to me as a professional because it helps me to embrace new curriculum into my classroom. For example, a teacher may be using a math program that has been successful for a couple of years, when he or she is instructed by the county to use a different math program. It is much easier for a teacher to embrace and implement a program while previously using another when the program has current research based evidence that it will be more successful.
- To develop relationships of mutual trust and create partnership with the families we serve. This is important to me as a professional because when an atmosphere of trust and partnership between the professional and families. There is opportunity for outstanding growth (socially, emotionally, physically, educationally) for the child. Because communication and respect is present as well and this allows the teacher or caregiver to provide the best service possible for child.
- To share resources with co-workers, collaborating to ensure that the best possible early childhood care and education program is provided. This is important to me because I know that there are subject areas that I am not largely knowledgeable. Therefore being able to utilze my co-worker as a resourse would help me provide my students with the material needed.
