Perspectives on Diversity and Culture

Perspective on Diversity and Culture
Background Information:
I interviewed a 78 year old African American Female, A 40 year old Caucasian Male and a 13 year old biracial girl.
Which aspects of culture and diversity that I have studied in this course are included in the answers I received—and what are some examples?
All of the three individuals defined culture in the context of race, clothes and food. The 78 and 40 year olds defined culture and diversity as where one lives and their economic status. The 13 year old defined culture and diversity as the clothes one wears and the hairstyle they wear.

Body language, expression and language of a person was omitted. Religious and political beliefs were also omitted.
In what ways has thinking about other people’s definitions of culture and diversity influenced my own thinking about these topics
Interviewing and listening to others has made me realize that different age groups have different ideas of culture and diversity.  Most however, regardless of their age only understand surface culture.

My Family Culture

My Family Culture

*Description of the 3 items I would choose to take with me.

Item 1
My family photo book
I would take a photograph that includes my mom, 3 sisters, my 2 brothers and me. I would take this picture because; unlike most group photos we did not plan to wear a certain color. We all wore clothes that we chose and hairstyles we chose individually. I think this picture is a great talking peace to discuss my family. It shows our beliefs as a group and also our beliefs as individuals. We had varying hairstyles and clothing styles, yet the belief to be individuals also reflected how we believed a family should function as a unit.

Item 2
My mother’s macaroni and cheese recipe
This is something all her children request be present at holiday dinners. It is very creamy, baked and has more cheese in it than macaroni. I want give the recipe away here on this blog page because only her children have the recipe. This dish is apart of our culture.

Item 3
The Holy Bible
Although we do not have a family bible, the bible is something that was read and promoted in our home. The teachings have guided our home.

*The one personal item I would keep.
The Holy Bible. It was the thing that guided my family. This item reflects a lot of my family culture and belief.

Insight gained from this assignment
This assignment made me really focus in on what I see as valuable with regard to my culture and family. I had to really look at what really reflected my beliefs. The photo also made me become aware of my family and our similarities.
