Perspective on Diversity and Culture
Background Information:
I interviewed a 78 year old
African American Female, A 40 year old Caucasian Male and a 13 year old
biracial girl.
Which aspects of culture and diversity that I have studied in this
course are included in the answers I received—and what are some examples?
All of the three individuals
defined culture in the context of race, clothes and food. The 78 and 40 year
olds defined culture and diversity as where one lives and their economic
status. The 13 year old defined culture and diversity as the clothes one wears
and the hairstyle they wear.
Body language, expression and
language of a person was omitted. Religious and political beliefs were also
omitted.
In what ways has thinking about other people’s definitions of culture
and diversity influenced my own thinking about these topics
Interviewing and listening to
others has made me realize that different age groups have different ideas of
culture and diversity. Most however,
regardless of their age only understand surface culture.
I find it interesting to read everyone's responses of definitions. Like you stated most people are only recognizing a person's surface culture. With all of the different definitions however, it seems that most have only a general idea of culture and diversity and lack the additional knowledge about how culture goes well beneath what others can see. As we have learned this week, culture also includes what cannot be seen with the eyes.
ReplyDeleteIt is so interesting how just by age alone, the answers to the same question gives so many different perspectives and answers. The ideas conveyed and expressed to you were general and surface answers as to what culture and diversity really are. But overall, the understanding of culture and diversity is seems pretty standard.
